Belle Isle Summary

Belle Isle is a city located in Orange County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 5,988 at the 2010 census.

History

Belle Isle was founded in 1925 by a group of investors from Ohio. The city was named after Belle Isle Park in Detroit, Michigan. The city was incorporated in 1925 and was originally a residential community.

Geography

Belle Isle is located at 28°30′N 81°20′W (28.50, -81.33). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), of which 4.1 square miles (10.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (2.17%) is water.

Economy

Belle Isle is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to a number of corporate headquarters, including Darden Restaurants, Inc., and Tupperware Brands Corporation.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,988 people, 2,541 households, and 1,637 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,461.2 people per square mile (564.3/km2). There were 2,817 housing units at an average density of 690.2 per square mile (266.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.2% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 25.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 92.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,938, and the median income for a family was $54,945. Males had a median income of $37,913 versus $30,813 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
