Auburndale Summary

Auburndale is a city located in Polk County, Florida, United States. The population was 13,507 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lakeland–Winter Haven Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Auburndale was founded in 1880 by Captain Henry T. Parker, a Civil War veteran. The city was named after his hometown of Auburn, Massachusetts. The first settlers were mostly citrus growers and cattle ranchers. The city was incorporated in 1911.

Geography

Auburndale is located at 28°1′N 81°48′W (28.0167, -81.8). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) (1.17%) is water.

Economy

Auburndale is home to several large employers, including Publix Super Markets, Inc., Florida Polytechnic University, and the Florida Department of Transportation. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 11,945 people, 4,717 households, and 3,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,478.2 people per square mile (571.2/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 627.2 per square mile (242.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 14.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 8.2% of the population.
There were 4,717 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $35,845, and the median income for a family was $41,945. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $17,890. About 9.2% of families and 11.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
