Apollo Beach Summary

Apollo Beach is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Hillsborough County, Florida, United States. It is part of the Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 14,055 at the 2010 census.

History

The area now known as Apollo Beach was originally inhabited by the Tocobaga Indians. The first non-native settlers arrived in the late 1800s, and the area was known as “Sampson’s Landing”. In the early 1900s, the area was renamed “Apollo Beach” after the Apollo space program.
The area was developed in the 1950s and 1960s as a planned community. The first homes were built in the late 1950s, and the community was officially incorporated in 1965. The community was designed to be a self-contained, master-planned community with its own shopping center, schools, and recreational facilities.

Geography

Apollo Beach is located at 27°45'25" North, 82°25'17" West (27.756944, -82.421389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 7.9 square miles (20.5 km2) is land and 0.4 square miles (1.0 km2) (4.90%) is water.

Economy

Apollo Beach is home to several businesses, including a marina, a golf course, and a variety of restaurants and retail stores. The area is also home to several industrial and manufacturing companies, including Mosaic, a phosphate mining and fertilizer production company.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 11,332 people, 4,845 households, and 3,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,440.2 people per square mile (556.2/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 645.2/sq mi (248.9/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 94.17% White, 1.90% African American, 0.20% Native American, 1.45% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.90% from other races, and 1.36% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.17% of the population.
There were 4,845 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.2% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 2.75.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 19.7% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.3 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $50,945, and the median income for a family was $58,945. Males had a median income of $41,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $26,945. About 4.2% of families and 6.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
