Nucla Summary

Nucla is a small town located in Montrose County, Colorado, United States. It is situated in the Uncompahgre Valley, at the junction of the San Miguel and Dolores Rivers. The town was founded in 1882 and was named after the nearby Nucla Mine. The population of Nucla was 741 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Nucla is located at 38°14′N 108°25′W (38.23, -108.41). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

History

Nucla was founded in 1882 by the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company. The town was named after the nearby Nucla Mine, which was named after the Spanish word for “nucleus”. The town was originally a coal mining town, but the coal mines eventually closed in the early 1900s.
In the early 1900s, Nucla became a farming and ranching community. The town was also home to a number of uranium mines, which were active until the late 1970s.

Economy

Nucla’s economy is largely based on agriculture and ranching. The town is home to a number of farms and ranches, as well as a few small businesses. The town is also home to a number of uranium mines, which are still active today.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 741 people, 305 households, and 206 families residing in the town. The population density was 817.3 people per square mile (315.7/km2). There were 339 housing units at an average density of 372.3 per square mile (143.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 94.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.2% of the population.
There were 305 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.4% were married couples living together, 8.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.4% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
