Geography

Keenesburg is located at 40°59'25"N 104°37'45"W (40.990278, -104.629167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

History

Keenesburg was founded in 1887 by William Keene, a rancher from Nebraska. He purchased land in the area and began to develop it for farming and ranching. The town was officially incorporated in 1908.
In the early 1900s, Keenesburg was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several grain elevators, a flour mill, a creamery, and a feed store. The town also had a hotel, a bank, a post office, and a newspaper.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as the agricultural industry shifted away from the area. The town's population decreased and many of the businesses closed.
In the late 1970s, the town began to experience a resurgence. The town was home to a large number of oil and gas wells, and the population began to increase.

The racial makeup of the town was 91.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 5.7% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.64 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
