Westmorland is a small city located in Imperial County, California, United States. It is situated on the western edge of the Salton Sea, approximately 8 miles (13 km) south of the city of El Centro. The population was 5,145 at the 2010 census, up from 4,719 at the 2000 census.

History

Westmorland was founded in 1906 by the Imperial Land Company, which was owned by the Southern Pacific Railroad. The town was named after Westmorland County, England, and was intended to be a model agricultural community. The town was incorporated in 1946.

Westmorland is located at 33°2′25″N 115°30′17″W (33.040278, -115.504722). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.

There were 1,541 households, out of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.2% were non-families. 22.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.06 and the average family size was 3.60.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 33.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 18.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.2 males.
