Rialto, California is a city located in San Bernardino County, California, United States. The city is situated in the Inland Empire region of Southern California, approximately 60 miles east of Los Angeles. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 99,171, making it the most populous city in San Bernardino County.
History
Rialto was founded in 1887 by the Southern Pacific Railroad. The city was named after the Rialto Bridge in Venice, Italy. The city was incorporated in 1911 and has since grown to become the largest city in San Bernardino County.
Geography
Rialto is located at 34°5′39″N 117°22′54″W (34.094167, -117.381667). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 24.4 square miles (63.2 km2), of which 24.4 square miles (63.2 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km2) (0.08%) is water.
Economy
Rialto’s economy is largely based on manufacturing and distribution. The city is home to several large industrial parks, including the Rialto Industrial Park, which is home to a variety of businesses, including food processing, automotive parts, and electronics. The city is also home to several retail centers, including the Rialto Marketplace, which is anchored by a Walmart Supercenter.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 99,171 people, 28,945 households, and 22,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,068.2 people per square mile (1,569.3/km2). There were 30,945 housing units at an average density of 1,265.2 per square mile (489.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.2% White, 5.2% African American, 1.1% Native American, 2.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 30.3% from other races, and 4.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 57.2% of the population.
There were 28,945 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 17.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.2% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.37 and the average family size was 3.81.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 33.2% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 8.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $45,845. Males had a median income of $35,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $16,945.
