Hopland Summary

Hopland is a small unincorporated community located in Mendocino County, California. It is situated in the northern part of the state, about 70 miles north of San Francisco. The population of Hopland was 756 at the 2010 census.

History

The area now known as Hopland was originally inhabited by the Pomo people, who lived in the area for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans. The first Europeans to settle in the area were Russian fur traders, who established a trading post in 1812. The area was later settled by American settlers in the mid-1800s. The town was originally known as Sanel, but was renamed Hopland in 1878 after the local hop industry.

Geography

Hopland is located in the northern part of Mendocino County, about 70 miles north of San Francisco. It is situated in the Russian River Valley, at an elevation of 845 feet. The town is surrounded by rolling hills and vineyards, and is located near the Mendocino National Forest.

Economy

The economy of Hopland is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several wineries and vineyards, and is known for its production of hops. The area is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and a brewery.
