Encampment Summary

Encampment is a small town located in Carbon County, Wyoming, United States. It is situated in the Sierra Madre Mountains, near the North Platte River. The town was founded in 1879 and was originally known as “Encamped”. The population was 517 at the 2000 census.

History

Encampment was founded in 1879 by a group of miners who were looking for gold in the area. The town was originally known as “Encamped”, but the name was changed to “Encampment” in 1882. The town was incorporated in 1885.
The town was a major stop on the Union Pacific Railroad, and it was also a major stop on the Overland Trail. The town was a popular destination for travelers, and it was also a popular spot for cattle drives.
In the early 1900s, the town was a major center for the timber industry. The town was also home to a large number of sheep and cattle ranches.

Geography

Encampment is located at 41°14'17" North, 106°45'17" West (41.238, -106.755). The town is situated in the Sierra Madre Mountains, near the North Platte River. The elevation of the town is 6,845 feet (2,089 m).
The town is located in Carbon County, Wyoming. The nearest cities are Saratoga, Wyoming (14 miles to the north) and Rawlins, Wyoming (25 miles to the south).

Economy

The economy of Encampment is largely based on tourism and agriculture. The town is a popular destination for outdoor recreation, and it is also home to a number of ranches and farms.

The racial makeup of the town was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.6% from other races, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 6.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.5% were non-families. 28.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.3% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 24.3% from 25 to 44, 28.3% from 45 to 64, and 16.4% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.3 males.
