Sunland Park Summary

Sunland Park is a city located in Doña Ana County, New Mexico, United States. It is situated along the Rio Grande, just across the border from El Paso, Texas. The city is part of the El Paso–Las Cruces combined statistical area. As of the 2010 census, the city population was 14,106, making it the second-largest city in Doña Ana County.

History

Sunland Park was founded in the early 1900s as a farming community. The city was named after the Sunland Park Race Track, which opened in 1959. The track was the first in the state to offer pari-mutuel betting. The city was incorporated in 1983.

Geography

Sunland Park is located at 31°50'25" North, 106°37'17" West (31.840278, -106.621389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Economy

Sunland Park is home to several businesses, including a Walmart Supercenter, a Lowe's Home Improvement store, and a variety of restaurants and retail stores. The city is also home to the Sunland Park Racetrack and Casino, which offers live horse racing and simulcast betting.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 14,106 people, 4,845 households, and 3,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,364.2 people per square mile (1,299.3/km2). There were 5,093 housing units at an average density of 1,213.2 per square mile (468.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 77.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 18.3% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 87.2% of the population.
There were 4,845 households, out of which 39.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 21.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.90 and the average family size was 3.41.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 10.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,917, and the median income for a family was $27,917. Males had a median income of $25,917 versus $19,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $11,917. About 22.2% of families and 25.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 33.2% of those under age 18 and 18.2% of those age 65 or over.
