San Jon is a small village located in Quay County, New Mexico. It is situated in the eastern part of the state, about 25 miles south of Tucumcari. The village has a population of approximately 500 people, and is part of the Tucumcari Micropolitan Statistical Area.
Geography
San Jon is located in the eastern part of Quay County, New Mexico. It is situated at an elevation of 4,092 feet above sea level. The village is located on the western edge of the Llano Estacado, a large plateau that stretches across the Texas and New Mexico border. The area is characterized by flat, arid terrain, with occasional mesas and buttes. The climate is semi-arid, with hot summers and mild winters.
The village is located along U.S. Route 54, which runs through the center of town. The nearest major city is Tucumcari, located 25 miles to the north. Other nearby towns include Logan, Nara Visa, and House.
History
San Jon was founded in the late 19th century as a stop on the Santa Fe Trail. The village was named after San Juan Bautista, a Spanish mission that was located nearby. The village was incorporated in 1909, and the first post office was established in 1910.
In the early 20th century, San Jon was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several cotton gins, as well as a number of other businesses. The town also had a school, a bank, and a hotel.
