Paradise Hills Summary
Paradise Hills is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Bernalillo County, New Mexico, United States. It is a suburb of Albuquerque, located in the South Valley area of the city. As of the 2010 census, the population of Paradise Hills was 15,269.
Geography
Paradise Hills is located at 35°3'25" North, 106°37'25" West (35.056944, -106.62361). It is situated in the South Valley area of Albuquerque, approximately 8 miles south of downtown. The CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of which is land.
History
Paradise Hills was originally part of the Atrisco Land Grant, which was established in 1710 by the Spanish Crown. The area was used for farming and ranching until the 1950s, when it was annexed by the City of Albuquerque. In the 1960s, the area was developed as a residential neighborhood.
Economy
The economy of Paradise Hills is largely based on the service industry. The area is home to a variety of restaurants, retail stores, and other businesses. The University of New Mexico is also located nearby, providing employment opportunities for residents.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 15,269 people, 5,845 households, and 3,945 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 3,637.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the CDP was 63.3% White, 2.2% African American, 1.3% Native American, 1.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 28.2% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 57.2% of the population.
There were 5,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $35,945, and the median income for a family was $41,945. Males had a median income of $30,945 versus $25,945 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $17,945. About 11.2% of families and 14.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 18.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
