Lovington is a city located in Lea County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 8,131 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Lea County.

Geography

Lovington is located at 33°23'25" North, 103°20'25" West (33.390278, -103.340278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.

History

Lovington was founded in 1906 by rancher and businessman John Loving. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1908. The town grew rapidly due to the discovery of oil in the area in the 1920s. The oil boom brought many people to the area and Lovington quickly became a bustling town.
The town was also home to the first radio station in New Mexico, KVIO, which began broadcasting in 1925.

Lovington is the economic center of Lea County and is home to many businesses and industries. The city is home to several oil and gas companies, including Chevron, ConocoPhillips, and Occidental Petroleum.

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,131 people, 2,845 households, and 1,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,567.2 people per square mile (605.7/km2). There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 597.2 per square mile (230.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 22.2% from other races, and 2.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 44.2% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 35.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.76 and the average family size was 3.33.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 9.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $35,938. Males had a median income of $30,938 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,938.
