Loving Summary

Loving, New Mexico is a small town located in Eddy County, in the southeastern corner of the state. It is situated on the Pecos River, near the Texas border. The town was founded in 1908 by rancher Oliver Loving, and is named after him. The population of Loving was 1,719 in the 2010 census.

Loving is located at 32°59'25"N 104°25'45"W (32.990278, -104.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Loving is a small, rural town with a limited economy. The main industries are agriculture and oil and gas production. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,719 people, 645 households, and 463 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,527.1 people per square mile (976.3/km2). There were 717 housing units at an average density of 1,039.3 per square mile (400.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.2% White, 0.5% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 16.3% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 44.2% of the population.
There were 645 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.7% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 25.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.67 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
