Algodones Summary

Algodones, New Mexico is a small unincorporated community located in Sandoval County, New Mexico. It is situated on the banks of the Rio Grande, approximately 25 miles north of Albuquerque. The population of Algodones was estimated to be 1,845 in 2019.

History

Algodones was originally inhabited by the Pueblo Indians, who lived in the area for centuries before the arrival of the Spanish in the 16th century. The Spanish established a mission in the area in 1680, and the town was officially founded in 1706. The town was named after the nearby Algodones Mountains, which were named for the abundance of wild onions that grew in the area.
In the 19th century, Algodones became an important stop on the Santa Fe Trail, a major trade route between the United States and Mexico. The town was also a popular stop for travelers heading to and from the nearby hot springs.
In the early 20th century, Algodones experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The town was home to several businesses, including a hotel, a general store, a post office, and a school.
