Alamogordo Summary

History

The area around Alamogordo has been inhabited for thousands of years by Native American tribes, including the Mescalero Apache, Jicarilla Apache, and the Kiowa. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 19th century, and the town of Alamogordo was founded in 1898. The name Alamogordo is derived from the Spanish words alamo, meaning "cottonwood tree," and gordo, meaning "fat" or "thick."

During World War II, Alamogordo was the site of the Alamogordo Bombing and Gunnery Range, where the first atomic bomb was tested in 1945. The city continued to grow after the war, and by the 1970s, it had become a major tourist destination, with attractions such as the White Sands National Monument and the New Mexico Museum of Space History.

Geography

Alamogordo is located in the Tularosa Basin of the Chihuahuan Desert, at an elevation of 4,330 feet (1,320 m). The city is situated on the eastern edge of the Sacramento Mountains, and is bordered to the east by the White Sands National Monument. The city is located approximately 60 miles (97 km) north of El Paso, Texas, and 90 miles (145 km) south of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
The climate in Alamogordo is semi-arid, with hot summers and mild winters. The average annual temperature is 64 °F (18 °C), and the average annual precipitation is 11.5 inches (292 mm).

Economy

Alamogordo's economy is largely based on tourism, agriculture, and military spending. The city is home to Holloman Air Force Base, which is a major employer in the area. The base is home to the 49th Wing, which is the host unit for the base. The base also houses the German Air Force Tactical Training Center, which is a joint venture between the German and U.S. Air Forces.

The racial makeup of the city was 75.2% White, 1.3% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.9% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 17.7% from other races, and 3.6% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 44.2% of the population.
