Unity Summary

Unity is a town in Waldo County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,722 at the 2010 census. It is the home of Unity College, a small liberal arts college focusing on environmental studies.

History

The area that is now Unity was first settled in 1794 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The town was incorporated in 1802 and named after the concept of unity. The town was originally a farming community, but by the mid-19th century, it had become a center for the lumber industry. The town was also home to several mills, including a gristmill, a sawmill, and a carding mill.

Geography

Unity is located in the western part of Waldo County, in the Midcoast region of Maine. It is bordered by the towns of Thorndike to the north, Burnham to the east, Troy to the south, and Freedom to the west. Unity is situated on the western shore of Unity Pond, a small lake that is part of the Sheepscot River watershed.
The town has a total area of 24.2 square miles, of which 23.7 square miles is land and 0.5 square miles is water. The highest point in Unity is the summit of Unity Mountain, at an elevation of 1,068 feet above sea level.

Economy

The economy of Unity is largely based on tourism and education. Unity College, a small liberal arts college focusing on environmental studies, is located in the town and is the largest employer in the area. The college also attracts many visitors to the area, as do the nearby lakes and forests.
The town is also home to several small businesses, including a general store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. There are also several farms in the area, which produce a variety of crops and livestock.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,722 people, 690 households, and 441 families residing in the town. The population density was 72.3 people per square mile. There were 790 housing units at an average density of 33.3 per square mile. The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.5% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 690 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.3% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 15.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $35,938, and the median income for a family was $45,000. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $17,945.
