Newcastle Summary
Newcastle is a town located in Lincoln County, Maine, United States. The population was 1,764 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Portland–South Portland–Biddeford, Maine metropolitan statistical area.
History
The area that is now Newcastle was first settled in 1754 by John and Mary (Baker) Smith. The town was incorporated on June 25, 1775, and was named after Newcastle upon Tyne in England.
In the early 19th century, Newcastle was a center of shipbuilding and lime production. The town was also home to a number of granite quarries, which provided material for many of the buildings in the area.
Geography
Newcastle is located at 43°56′N 69°51′W (43.937, -69.851). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 24.2 square miles (62.7 km2), of which, 23.7 square miles (61.3 km2) of it is land and 0.5 square miles (1.3 km2) of it (2.08%) is water.
Economy
Newcastle’s economy is largely based on tourism and the service industry. The town is home to a number of bed and breakfasts, restaurants, and other businesses catering to visitors. The town is also home to a number of small businesses, including a boatyard, a marina, and a number of retail stores.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,764 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 74.5 people per square mile (28.8/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 35.6 per square mile (13.8/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.9% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 8.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,250, and the median income for a family was $50,000. Males had a median income of $36,250 versus $25,000 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
