Moreauville Summary

Moreauville is a small village located in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana. It is situated on the banks of Bayou des Glaises, a tributary of the Red River. The village has a population of approximately 500 people and is located about 30 miles northwest of Alexandria.

History

Moreauville was founded in 1819 by Jean Baptiste Moreau, a French-Canadian fur trader. He purchased the land from the local Native Americans and established a trading post. The village was named after him and was incorporated in 1848.
In the late 19th century, Moreauville was a thriving agricultural community. Cotton, corn, and sugar cane were the main crops grown in the area. The village also had a sawmill, a gristmill, and a cotton gin.
In the early 20th century, the village experienced a period of decline. The Great Depression and the mechanization of agriculture caused many of the local farmers to leave the area. The population of Moreauville decreased from 1,000 in 1930 to 500 in 2000.

Geography

Moreauville is located in the northern part of Avoyelles Parish. It is situated on the banks of Bayou des Glaises, a tributary of the Red River. The village is surrounded by flat, fertile farmland. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters.
