Dodson Summary

Dodson is a small town located in Lincoln Parish, Louisiana. It is situated in the northwest corner of the parish, approximately 10 miles south of Ruston and 15 miles north of Grambling. The population of Dodson was estimated to be 1,072 in 2019.

History

Dodson was founded in 1883 by the Dodson family, who had moved to the area from Mississippi. The town was named after the family, and the first post office was established in 1884. The town was incorporated in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Dodson was a thriving agricultural community, with cotton, corn, and sweet potatoes being the main crops. The town also had a sawmill, a gristmill, and a cotton gin.
In the 1920s, Dodson began to experience a decline in population due to the Great Depression. The town was further affected by the Dust Bowl of the 1930s, which caused many of the farmers to leave the area in search of work.
In the 1940s, Dodson began to experience a resurgence in population due to the establishment of a nearby military base. The base, which was located in nearby Ruston, provided jobs for many of the town’s residents.
In the 1950s, Dodson experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The town was home to several businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a movie theater.

Dodson is located in the northwest corner of Lincoln Parish, approximately 10 miles south of Ruston and 15 miles north of Grambling. The town is situated on the banks of the Ouachita River, which provides a natural border between the town and the neighboring parish of Union.
