Coushatta Summary

Coushatta is a small town located in Red River Parish, Louisiana. It is situated on the banks of the Red River, approximately 30 miles south of Shreveport. The town was founded in 1839 and is the parish seat of Red River Parish. The population of Coushatta was 1,964 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Coushatta is located at 32°47'25" North, 93°14'45" West (32.790278, -93.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

History

Coushatta was founded in 1839 by a group of settlers from the Coushatta tribe of Native Americans. The town was named after the tribe, which had been living in the area for centuries. The town was incorporated in 1845 and became the parish seat of Red River Parish in 1846.
The town was a major trading center for the surrounding area and was home to several businesses, including a cotton gin, a sawmill, and a gristmill. The town also had a post office, a bank, and a hotel.
In the late 19th century, Coushatta was a major stop on the Texas and Pacific Railway. The railroad brought new businesses and people to the town, and the population grew to over 1,000 by the early 20th century.

Economy

Coushatta’s economy is largely based on agriculture and timber. The town is home to several large farms, as well as a number of smaller family-owned farms. The town is also home to several timber companies, which harvest and process timber from the surrounding forests.
The town is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, convenience stores, and a few small manufacturing companies.
