Planada Summary

Planada is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Merced County, California, United States. The population was 8,717 at the 2010 census, up from 6,461 at the 2000 census. It is located 8 miles (13 km) east-southeast of Atwater, at an elevation of 151 feet (46 m).

History

Planada was founded in 1891 by the Southern Pacific Railroad. The name is derived from the Spanish word for “plain” or “meadow”. The town was originally a stop on the railroad line, and the first post office was established in 1892.
In the early 1900s, Planada was a thriving agricultural community, with many of the residents employed in the local canneries. The town was also home to a large number of Italian immigrants, who worked in the local vineyards and orchards.

Geography

Planada is located at 37°14′N 120°37′W (37.23, -120.62). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Planada’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to a number of farms and ranches, as well as several wineries and orchards. The local economy is also supported by a number of small businesses, including restaurants, grocery stores, and other retail establishments.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 6,461 people, 1,845 households, and 1,521 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 4,945.3 people per square mile (1,907.2/km2). There were 1,945 housing units at an average density of 1,478.3 per square mile (571.2/km2).
