Montague Summary

Montague is a small city located in Siskiyou County, California, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Shasta River, near the Oregon border. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census, up from 1,817 at the 2000 census.

History

Montague was founded in 1854 by a group of settlers from the Oregon Trail. The town was named after the Montague family, who were among the first settlers. The town was originally a mining camp, and the first post office was established in 1855.
In the late 19th century, Montague was a bustling town with a population of over 1,000. It was a major stop on the stagecoach route between Yreka and Oregon. The town was also home to a number of saloons, hotels, and stores.
In the early 20th century, Montague began to decline as the mining industry in the area declined. The population dropped to just over 500 by the 1950s.

Geography

Montague is located at 41°51′N 122°37′W (41.845, -122.619). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Montague’s economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to a number of farms, ranches, and orchards, which produce a variety of fruits and vegetables. The city is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Montague Museum, the Montague-Yreka Railroad, and the Shasta River.
