Maxwell Summary

Maxwell is a small unincorporated community located in Colusa County, California. It is situated in the Sacramento Valley, approximately 10 miles east of the city of Colusa. The population of Maxwell was estimated to be 1,845 in 2019.

History

Maxwell was founded in 1871 by William Maxwell, a rancher from Missouri. He purchased a large tract of land in the area and began to develop it for agricultural purposes. The town was named after him. In 1876, the first post office was established in Maxwell.
In the early 1900s, the town began to grow and prosper. The railroad arrived in 1906, bringing with it new businesses and opportunities. The town was incorporated in 1909.
In the 1920s, Maxwell experienced a period of growth and prosperity. The town was home to several businesses, including a bank, a hotel, a movie theater, and a variety of stores.
In the 1950s, Maxwell began to decline. The railroad was abandoned and many businesses closed. The population decreased and the town became a quiet, rural community.
