Maricopa is a small city located in Kern County, California, United States. It is situated in the southern part of the county, about 30 miles (48 km) northwest of Bakersfield. The population was 1,154 at the 2010 census, up from 819 at the 2000 census.

History

Maricopa was founded in 1876 by the Southern Pacific Railroad. The town was named after the Maricopa Indians, who were the original inhabitants of the area. The town was originally a railroad stop, but it soon became a center for agriculture and ranching. The town was incorporated in 1911.

Geography

Maricopa is located at 35°14′N 119°25′W (35.23, -119.41). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.

The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 0.7% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 25.7% from other races, and 3.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 39.2% of the population.
There were 294 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.5% were non-families. 21.6% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 30.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $32,500. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
