Lincoln Summary
Lincoln, California is a city located in Placer County, California, United States. It is part of the Sacramento–Arden-Arcade–Roseville Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 42,819 at the 2010 census, up from 35,970 at the 2000 census.
History
Lincoln was founded in 1859 by Theodore Judah, a railroad engineer who was instrumental in the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. The city was named after Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. The city was incorporated in 1890.
Geography
Lincoln is located at 38°53′24″N 121°17′24″W (38.890045, -121.290045). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 14.4 square miles (37.3 km2), of which, 14.4 square miles (37.3 km2) of it is land and 0.03% is water.
Economy
Lincoln is home to a variety of businesses, including retail, manufacturing, and service industries. The city is home to several large employers, including the Lincoln Unified School District, Placer County, and the Lincoln Police Department. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, shops, and professional services.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 35,970 people, 12,811 households, and 9,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,500.3 people per square mile (965.7/km2). There were 13,068 housing units at an average density of 907.2 per square mile (350.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 0.9% African American, 1.2% Native American, 4.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 10.2% from other races, and 4.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 19.2% of the population.
There were 12,811 households, out of which 41.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.7% were non-families. 19.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.20.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 29.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 9.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.7 males.
