La Palma Summary
La Palma is a city located in Orange County, California, United States. It is located in the northwestern corner of the county, and is bordered by the cities of Cypress, Stanton, Buena Park, and Anaheim. The population was 15,568 at the 2010 census, up from 15,408 at the 2000 census.
History
The area that is now La Palma was originally part of the Rancho Los Coyotes, a Mexican land grant given to Manuel Nieto in 1834. The area was later part of the larger Rancho Los Alamitos, which was granted to Juan Jose and Juan Pablo Grijalva in 1845. The area was sparsely populated until the 1950s, when the area began to be developed for residential use. The city was incorporated in 1955, and the first mayor was elected in 1956.
Geography
La Palma is located at 33°50′54″N 118°2′10″W (33.848333, -118.036111). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.1 square miles (5.4 km2), all of it land.
Economy
La Palma is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several corporate headquarters, including the headquarters of the La Palma-based company, La Palma Foods.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 15,408 people, 5,717 households, and 4,541 families residing in the city. The population density was 7,326.3 people per square mile (2,831.2/km2). There were 5,890 housing units at an average density of 2,814.3 per square mile (1,087.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 63.45% White, 0.60% African American, 0.45% Native American, 24.90% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 7.45% from other races, and 3.03% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 17.90% of the population.
There were 5,717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.2% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.7 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,837, and the median income for a family was $66,921. Males had a median income of $45,945 versus $35,836 for females. The per capita income for the city was $25,845. About 3.2% of families and 4.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.7% of those age 65 or over.
