Geography
Dorris is located at 41°51'25" North, 122°17'25" West (41.857, -122.290). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
History
Dorris was founded in 1883 by William Dorris, a rancher from Oregon. The town was named after him. The first post office was established in 1884.
In the early 1900s, Dorris was a bustling town with a population of over 1,000. It had a hotel, a bank, a newspaper, a school, and several stores. The town was also home to a large Chinese population, who worked in the local mines and on the railroad.
In the 1920s, the population began to decline as the mines closed and the railroad was abandoned. By the 1950s, the population had dropped to just over 500.

The economy of Dorris is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms and ranches, as well as a few small businesses. The town also has a small tourism industry, as it is located near several popular outdoor recreation areas.

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 476 housing units at an average density of 667.2 per square mile (258.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.2% White, 0.2% African American, 1.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 14.2% from other races, and 2.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 22.2% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 27.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 18.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,000, and the median income for a family was $30,000. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $13,845.
