Delhi Summary

Delhi is a city located in Merced County, California, United States. It is situated in the San Joaquin Valley, approximately 8 miles (13 km) west of Merced, at an elevation of 118 feet (36 m). The population was 6,754 at the 2010 census, up from 6,536 at the 2000 census.

History

Delhi was founded in 1869 by the Southern Pacific Railroad. It was named after the city of Delhi, India, and was incorporated in 1908. The city was originally a farming community, but it has since become a bedroom community for Merced and the surrounding areas.

Geography

Delhi is located at 37°20'25" North, 120°48'45" West (37.340278, -120.8125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Delhi's economy is largely based on agriculture. The city is home to a number of farms, including dairy farms, vegetable farms, and fruit orchards. The city is also home to a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 6,536 people, 2,072 households, and 1,619 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,945.3 people per square mile (1,907.2/km2). There were 2,164 housing units at an average density of 1,637.2 per square mile (631.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.2% White, 1.2% African American, 1.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 36.2% from other races, and 4.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 63.2% of the population.
There were 2,072 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 21.2% were non-families. 17.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.14 and the average family size was 3.54.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 33.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 18.7% from 45 to 64, and 10.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $33,906. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,972 for females. The per capita income for the city was $12,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 25.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
