Bloomington Summary

Bloomington is a census-designated place located in San Bernardino County, California. It is located in the Inland Empire region of Southern California, approximately 10 miles east of San Bernardino. The population of Bloomington was 23,851 at the 2010 census, up from 19,318 at the 2000 census.

History

The area now known as Bloomington was originally inhabited by the Serrano Indians. The first Europeans to settle in the area were the Spanish, who established the Mission San Gabriel Arcangel in 1771. The area was later part of the Rancho San Bernardino land grant, which was established in 1842.
In 1851, the area was settled by a group of Mormon pioneers, led by Amasa Lyman and Charles C. Rich. The settlement was named Bloomington, after Bloomington, Illinois, the hometown of many of the settlers. The settlement was incorporated as a city in 1888.

Geography

Bloomington is located at 34°5′17″N 117°23′15″W (34.087900, -117.387500). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Bloomington is largely based on agriculture. The area is home to a variety of crops, including citrus, grapes, and avocados. The area is also home to several large industrial parks, which provide employment for many of the area’s residents.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 23,851 people, 6,819 households, and 5,541 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 5,717.2 people per square mile (2,210.2/km2). There were 7,093 housing units at an average density of 1,689.3 per square mile (651.2/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 57.2% White, 4.2% African American, 1.2% Native American, 1.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 32.2% from other races, and 4.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 57.2% of the population.
There were 6,819 households, out of which 44.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 20.2% were non-families. 15.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 5.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.48 and the average family size was 3.86.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 33.2% under the age of 18, 10.7% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 8.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $37,813, and the median income for a family was $40,945. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $13,845. About 14.2% of families and 17.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.
