Atwater is a city located in Merced County, California, United States. It is situated in the San Joaquin Valley, approximately 8 miles (13 km) west of Merced, at an elevation of 151 feet (46 m). The population was 28,168 at the 2010 census.
History
Atwater was founded in 1922 by the Atwater Land and Water Company, which was formed by the merger of the Atwater Land Company and the Atwater Water Company. The city was named after the Atwater family, who were early settlers in the area.
Atwater was incorporated in 1922 and has grown steadily since then. The city has a rich agricultural history, and is home to many large agricultural businesses.
Geography
Atwater is located at 37°17′N 120°45′W (37.28, -120.75). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.3 square miles (13.7 km2), all of it land.

Atwater is a major agricultural center in the San Joaquin Valley. The city is home to many large agricultural businesses, including Foster Farms, Hilmar Cheese Company, and Sun-Maid Raisins.

As of the census of 2010, there were 28,168 people, 8,945 households, and 6,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 5,300.2 people per square mile (2,053.2/km2). There were 9,445 housing units at an average density of 1,788.3 per square mile (692.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 63.2% White, 2.2% African American, 1.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 28.3% from other races, and 4.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 54.2% of the population.
There were 8,945 households, out of which 41.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.2% were non-families. 20.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.14 and the average family size was 3.63.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 32.2% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 19.2% from 45 to 64, and 10.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 30.7 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
