Atascadero Summary
Atascadero is a city located in San Luis Obispo County, California, United States. It is situated approximately halfway between Los Angeles and San Francisco, and is a part of the San Luis Obispo-Paso Robles-Arroyo Grande metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the population of Atascadero was 28,310.
History
Atascadero was founded in 1913 by E.G. Lewis, a real estate developer from San Francisco. Lewis had previously developed the nearby town of Templeton, and he named Atascadero after the nearby Atascadero Creek. The name is derived from the Spanish word for “muddy place”.
Lewis purchased the land from the Mexican government in 1868, and he began to develop the area in the early 1900s. He built a hotel, a bank, a post office, and a general store. He also built a large mansion, which he named “The Castle”, and he used it as his residence.
In 1914, Lewis sold the land to the Atascadero Colony Company, which was formed by a group of investors from Los Angeles. The company planned to develop the area into a model community, and they began to build roads, schools, churches, and other infrastructure.
