Anderson Summary

Anderson is a city located in Shasta County, California, United States. It is situated along the Sacramento River, approximately 10 miles (16 km) south of Redding, the county seat. The population was 10,530 at the 2010 census, up from 8,922 at the 2000 census.

History

The area around Anderson was first settled in the 1850s by miners and ranchers. The town was named after Anderson Creek, which was named after a settler, Elias Anderson, who arrived in the area in 1852. Anderson was incorporated in 1912.

Geography

Anderson is located at 40°27′N 122°17′W (40.45, -122.29). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.7 square miles (12.2 km2), of which, 4.6 square miles (11.9 km2) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) of it (2.17%) is water.

Economy

The economy of Anderson is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The city is home to several wineries, and is a popular destination for outdoor recreation. The city is also home to several manufacturing and industrial businesses, including a large lumber mill.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 8,922 people, 3,541 households, and 2,521 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,937.2 people per square mile (746.7/km2). There were 3,817 housing units at an average density of 817.3 per square mile (314.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 0.7% African American, 2.2% Native American, 0.9% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 5.7% from other races, and 3.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.7 males.
