Wynne Summary
Wynne is a city located in Cross County, Arkansas, United States. It is the county seat of Cross County and is located in the eastern part of the state. The population was 8,367 at the 2010 census, making it the largest city in Cross County.
History
The area that is now Wynne was first settled in the early 1800s by settlers from Tennessee and Kentucky. The town was originally known as Cross Roads, but was later renamed Wynne in honor of Captain Jesse Wynne, a local Confederate soldier who was killed in the Battle of Shiloh.
The town was incorporated in 1883 and was the first town in Cross County to be incorporated. The first post office was established in 1884.
Geography
Wynne is located at 35°17'25" North, 90°41'17" West (35.290278, -90.688056). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Economy
Wynne is the economic center of Cross County and the surrounding area. The city is home to several large employers, including a Tyson Foods poultry processing plant, a Walmart distribution center, and a manufacturing plant for the automotive parts supplier, Autoliv.
The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and service providers.
Demographics
As of the 2010 census, there were 8,367 people, 3,093 households, and 2,092 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,033.2 people per square mile (399.2/km2). There were 3,521 housing units at an average density of 433.7 per square mile (167.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.2% White, 28.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 82.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $35,938. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,945. About 17.2% of families and 20.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
