Wilson Summary

Wilson is a city located in Mississippi County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Blytheville, Arkansas Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Wilson was founded in 1873 by William Wilson, a former Confederate soldier. The town was originally known as Wilson's Station, and was located on the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway. The town was incorporated in 1891.

Geography

Wilson is located at 35°51'25" North, 90°17'45" West (35.856944, -90.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Wilson's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several poultry processing plants, as well as a number of other businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,811 people, 717 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,521.2 people per square mile (586.3/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 681.2 per square mile (263.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.45% White, 40.45% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.50% from other races, and 1.21% from two or more races. 1.21% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 717 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 22.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.7% were non-families. 29.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.09.
