Ward Summary

Ward is a city in Lonoke County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Little Rock–North Little Rock–Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Ward was founded in 1871 by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway. The town was named after William Ward, a railroad official. The first post office was established in 1872.

Economy

The economy of Ward is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several poultry processing plants, as well as a number of small businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 2,844 people, 1,072 households, and 790 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,233.2 people per square mile (475.7/km2). There were 1,150 housing units at an average density of 498.3 per square mile (192.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.45% White, 17.90% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.14% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.77% from other races, and 1.49% from two or more races. 1.77% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,072 households, out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 21.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,938, and the median income for a family was $36,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $20,938 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845.
