Walnut Ridge Summary

Walnut Ridge is a city located in Lawrence County, Arkansas, United States. It is the county seat of Lawrence County and is located in the northeastern part of the state. The population was 4,524 at the 2010 census.

History

Walnut Ridge was founded in 1875 and was originally known as "Ridgeville". The name was changed to Walnut Ridge in 1883 when the post office was established. The city was incorporated in 1891.
Walnut Ridge was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1862. The Battle of Chalk Bluff was fought between Union and Confederate forces on the banks of the Black River. The Union forces were victorious and the Confederate forces retreated.
The city was also the site of a major airbase during World War II. The Walnut Ridge Army Airfield was used to train pilots for the war effort. The airfield was closed in 1945 and the land was sold to the city in 1947.

Walnut Ridge is located at 36°20'25"N 90°56'45"W (36.340278, -90.945278). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

The economy of Walnut Ridge is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to several large poultry processing plants, as well as a number of smaller businesses. The city is also home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 4,524 people, 1,845 households, and 1,097 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,077.2 people per square mile (415.9/km2). There were 2,072 housing units at an average density of 493.3 per square mile (190.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 5.2% Black or African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 16.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.7% were non-families. 34.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $32,917. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,945. About 17.2% of families and 20.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
