Waldron is a city located in Scott County, Arkansas, United States. It is the county seat of Scott County and is located in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains. The population was 4,048 at the 2010 census.
History
Waldron was founded in 1845 by William Waldron, a settler from Tennessee. The town was originally known as "Waldron's Store" and was located on the banks of the Poteau River. The town was incorporated in 1876 and was named after William Waldron.
In the late 19th century, Waldron was a major center for the timber industry. The town was also home to a number of sawmills and gristmills.
Geography
Waldron is located at 35°14'25" North, 94°10'17" West (35.240278, -94.171389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.
Economy
Waldron is the county seat of Scott County and is home to a number of businesses and industries. The town is home to a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other businesses. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory, a plastics factory, and a paper mill.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 4,048 people, 1,619 households, and 1,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 962.2 people per square mile (371.3/km2). There were 1,845 housing units at an average density of 441.7 per square mile (170.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 15.3% from other races, and 2.4% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 24.2% of the population.
There were 1,619 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.7% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $31,964. Males had a median income of $26,944 versus $19,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845.
