Trumann is a city located in Poinsett County, Arkansas, United States. It is situated in the northeast corner of the state, approximately 20 miles from the Mississippi River. The population was 7,243 at the 2010 census.

History

Trumann was founded in 1882 by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway. The city was named after the railroad's president, William Trumann. The city was incorporated in 1891 and was the first city in Poinsett County.
Trumann was a farming community until the early 1900s when the railroad brought in new industry. The city was home to a cotton mill, a lumber mill, and a brick factory. The city also had a number of stores and businesses.

Geography

Trumann is located at 35°33'25" North, 90°30'45" West (35.556944, -90.5125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), all land.

Economy

Trumann's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The city is home to a number of manufacturing plants, including a Tyson Foods poultry processing plant, a Georgia-Pacific lumber mill, and a brick factory. The city also has a number of retail stores and restaurants.

As of the census of 2010, there were 7,243 people, 2,845 households, and 1,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,400.2 people per square mile (541.3/km2). There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 595.2 per square mile (230.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 17.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.5% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.06.
