Subiaco Summary

Subiaco is a city located in Logan County, Arkansas, United States. It is situated in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, approximately 25 miles east of Fort Smith. The population was 1,919 at the 2010 census.

History

Subiaco was founded in 1877 by Father Benedictine monks from Subiaco, Italy. The monks established a monastery and a school, which eventually became Subiaco Academy. The town was named after the Italian city of Subiaco, where Saint Benedict of Nursia founded the first Benedictine monastery in the 6th century.
The town was incorporated in 1891 and the first mayor was Father Joseph Strub. The town grew rapidly in the early 20th century, and by the 1920s, it had become a popular tourist destination. The town was known for its mineral springs, which were believed to have healing properties.

Geography

Subiaco is located at 35°25'25" North, 94°17'45" West (35.423, -94.296). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Subiaco’s economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and cotton. The town is also home to several tourist attractions, including the Subiaco Abbey and Museum, the Subiaco Museum of Natural History, and the Subiaco Arts Center.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,919 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,611.7 people per square mile (619.7/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 681.3 per square mile (263.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
