Sidney Summary

Sidney is a small town located in the northeast corner of Arkansas in Poinsett County. It is situated on the banks of the St. Francis River and is surrounded by the Ozark Mountains. The town was founded in 1872 and was named after Sidney Suggs, a local landowner. The population of Sidney was 1,093 at the time of the 2000 census.

Geography

Sidney is located at 35°45'25" North, 90°45'25" West (35.756944, -90.756944). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Sidney’s economy is largely based on agriculture and timber. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a few restaurants. The town also has a small manufacturing plant that produces plastic products.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the town. The population density was 902.2 people per square mile (348.7/km2). There were 486 housing units at an average density of 400.2 per square mile (154.4/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.17% White, 0.37% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 1.81% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.45% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
