Sherwood Summary

Sherwood, Arkansas is a city located in Pulaski County, Arkansas. It is a suburb of Little Rock, the state capital, and is located just north of the city. The population of Sherwood was 29,523 at the 2010 census, making it the second largest city in Pulaski County.

History

Sherwood was founded in 1887 by the Arkansas and Louisiana Railroad. The city was named after the Sherwood Forest in England. The city was incorporated in 1941 and has grown steadily since then.

Geography

Sherwood is located at 34°48'25" North, 92°14'45" West (34.806944, -92.245833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 16.2 square miles (41.8 km2), of which 16.1 square miles (41.6 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Sherwood is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The city is also home to several large employers, including the Arkansas Department of Human Services, the Arkansas Department of Education, and the Arkansas Department of Health.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 29,523 people, 11,845 households, and 8,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,831.3 people per square mile (707.3/km2). There were 12,845 housing units at an average density of 794.2 per square mile (306.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.2% White, 19.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 2.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 11,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.3% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.3 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $45,837, and the median income for a family was $54,837. Males had a median income of $41,837 versus $30,837 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,837.
