Rison Summary

Rison is a city located in Cleveland County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Pine Bluff, Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Rison was founded in 1883 by the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway. The city was named after the railroad's president, William Rison. The city was incorporated in 1887.

Rison is home to several businesses, including a lumber mill, a feed mill, a cotton gin, and a sawmill. The city also has a number of retail stores, restaurants, and other services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,945 people, 745 households, and 517 families residing in the city. The population density was 876.3 people per square mile (338.3/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 381.2 per square mile (147.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.90% White, 29.90% Black or African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.10% Asian, 0.10% from other races, and 0.90% from two or more races. 0.90% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 745 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 17.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.2 males.
