Rector Summary

Rector is a city located in Clay County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,890 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Clay County.

History

Rector was founded in 1881 by the Rector Land and Improvement Company. The company was formed by a group of investors from Little Rock, Arkansas, who purchased the land from the St. Louis and Iron Mountain Railroad. The town was named after the company's president, William Rector.
The first post office was established in 1882 and the town was incorporated in 1883. The first school was built in 1884 and the first newspaper, the Rector Record, was established in 1885.

Geography

Rector is located at 36°17'25" North, 90°25'45" West (36.290278, -90.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
