Parkdale Summary
History
The town of Parkdale, Arkansas is located in the southeastern corner of the state, in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains. It is situated in the Arkansas River Valley, and is part of the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1883 by the Arkansas and Choctaw Railroad, and was named after the nearby Parkdale Plantation. The plantation was owned by the prominent local family of the same name, and the town was established as a stop along the railroad line.
The town grew quickly, and by the early 1900s it had become a thriving agricultural center. Cotton was the primary crop, and the town was home to several cotton gins and warehouses. The town also had a number of stores, churches, and other businesses.
In the 1920s, Parkdale began to experience a decline in population as many of its residents moved away in search of better economic opportunities. The Great Depression further exacerbated the town’s economic woes, and by the 1940s the population had dropped to just over 500.
The town experienced a resurgence in the 1950s, as the nearby city of Little Rock began to experience a population boom. Parkdale’s proximity to Little Rock made it an attractive option for those looking to escape the city’s hustle and bustle. The town’s population grew steadily throughout the 1950s and 1960s, and by the 1970s it had reached its peak of 1,500.
