Norman Summary

Norman is a city located in Washington County, Arkansas, United States. It is situated in the foothills of the Ozark Mountains, approximately 20 miles (32 km) south of Fayetteville and 40 miles (64 km) north of Fort Smith. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Norman was founded in 1876 by William Norman, a settler from Tennessee. The town was originally known as "Norman's Station" and was located on the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad. The town was incorporated in 1891 and was named after William Norman.
In the early 1900s, Norman was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several cotton gins, a grist mill, a sawmill, and a blacksmith shop. The town also had a hotel, a bank, and several stores.

Geography

Norman is located at 35°59'25" North, 94°17'45" West (35.990278, -94.295833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Norman's economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including a large dairy farm. The town also has a few small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 717 households, and 498 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 776 housing units at an average density of 645.2 per square mile (249.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.7% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 717 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 3.03.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $30,000, and the median income for a family was $35,000. Males had a median income of $27,000 versus $20,000 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,000.
