Moorefield was founded in 1883 by William Moorefield, a former Confederate soldier. He purchased the land from the federal government and began to develop the area. The town was originally known as Moorefield Station, and was a stop on the St. Louis and San Francisco Railroad. The town was officially incorporated in 1887.
In the early 1900s, Moorefield was a thriving agricultural community. The town was home to several cotton gins, a grist mill, and a sawmill. The town also had a hotel, a bank, and several stores.
