McGehee Summary

McGehee is a city located in Desha County, Arkansas, United States. It is the county seat of Desha County and is located on the Arkansas Delta. The population was 5,400 at the 2010 census.

History

McGehee was founded in 1871 by William McGehee, a planter from Mississippi. The town was named after him and was incorporated in 1875. The town was originally located on the banks of the Arkansas River, but was moved to its current location in 1879 due to flooding.
McGehee was an important stop on the St. Louis, Iron Mountain and Southern Railway, which ran through the town from 1881 to 1883. The railroad brought economic growth to the area, and the town became a center for cotton production.

Geography

McGehee is located at 33°9′25″N 91°20′45″W (33.156944, -91.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all land.

Economy

McGehee is a major center for cotton production in the Arkansas Delta. The town is also home to several manufacturing plants, including a Tyson Foods poultry processing plant and a Georgia-Pacific paper mill.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 5,400 people, 2,072 households, and 1,364 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,288.1 people per square mile (496.7/km2). There were 2,307 housing units at an average density of 551.2 per square mile (212.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 57.2% White, 39.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 2,072 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 24.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
