Marked Tree Summary
Marked Tree is a city located in Poinsett County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 2,917 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Poinsett County.
History
Marked Tree was founded in 1856 by the Reverend William H. Stringer, who named the town after a large tree that was marked with a cross. The town was incorporated in 1883.
The town was a major cotton shipping center in the late 19th century. The Marked Tree and Eastern Railroad was built in 1887 to connect the town to the St. Louis–San Francisco Railway. The railroad was later abandoned in the 1930s.
Geography
Marked Tree is located at 35°30′25″N 90°25′17″W (35.506944, -90.421389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.
Economy
Marked Tree is a small rural town with a population of just over 2,900 people. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a furniture manufacturer, a plastics manufacturer, and a metal fabrication company.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,917 people, 1,179 households, and 790 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,323.2 people per square mile (510.3/km2). There were 1,279 housing units at an average density of 571.2 per square mile (220.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 68.45% White, 29.45% Black or African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. 1.41% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 1,179 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 19.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $25,938, and the median income for a family was $31,964. Males had a median income of $27,500 versus $19,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845. About 17.2% of families and 20.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 28.2% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.
