Leola Summary

Leola is a small town located in Grant County, Arkansas. It is situated in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, about 25 miles south of Little Rock. Geography

Leola is located at 34°25'25" North, 92°25'45" West (34.423, -92.429). It is situated in the foothills of the Ouachita Mountains, about 25 miles south of Little Rock. The town is located in the Central Arkansas region and is part of the Little Rock-North Little Rock-Conway Metropolitan Statistical Area.
The town is situated on the banks of the Saline River, which flows through the area. The terrain is mostly flat, with some rolling hills. The climate is humid subtropical, with hot summers and mild winters.

History

Leola was founded in 1883 and named after the daughter of the first postmaster, Leola Smith. The town was originally a farming community, but it soon became a center for timber and coal mining. The town was incorporated in 1891.
In the early 20th century, Leola was a thriving community with a population of over 1,000. The town had several stores, a bank, a hotel, a movie theater, and a school. The town was also home to a number of churches, including the First Baptist Church, which was founded in 1883.
In the 1950s, the town began to decline as the coal and timber industries declined. The population dropped to just over 500 by the 1970s. In the 1980s, the town began to experience a resurgence as new businesses moved into the area.
